Diversity in Science, Aquatics, and Conservation!

Sea Scope Incorporated is a 501(c)(3) organization with the mission to increase diversity in science and aquatics for the purpose of increasing conservation efforts of our ocean planet. Educational workshops, aquatics training, and hands-on learning experiences are provided through high quality youth development programs. Sea Scope Inc’s motto is:  “We must narrow our scope to save the planet.”  A seascope is a telescope used to magnify small aquatic life in small bodies of water. Like a seascope, this organization focuses on the viability of the population of individuals that continue to face barriers.

COPE

The S in SCOPE emphasizes our scientific educational advancement purposes. But our mission goes even further. Our efforts strive to help all people of various ages create and sustain good physical, spiritual, and mental health. Swimming has shown to help those that suffer from depression, anxiety, ADHD, and stress. With approximately 70% of African Americans in the United States not knowing how to swim, water safety is a major focus of our organization.

Scuba diving for recreation and as a profession is an area in aquatics that is extremely underrepresented. This racial and ethnic disparity is due to a history of inequities, biases, and exclusionary practices in scuba diving. In addition to teaching water safety, Sea Scope Inc workshops teach snorkeling followed by scuba diving and encourage participants to become underwater explorers, while emphasizing ocean stewardship. Scuba diving has many benefits outside of being a recreational hobby. Diving has been known to improve areas of confidence and self-esteem , as well as induce improvement in emotional and mental well being.

The Community

And according to the 2021 State of Mental Health Report by Mental Health America, Indiana state prevalence of youth with at least one major depressive episode was 15.71% and Indiana was ranked 28 in the country.
